OfflineVoiceDictationonMac:WhatActuallyWorks
If you need dictation without a connection, most cloud tools cannot help — including this one. What genuinely works offline on macOS, and what it costs.
This is a guide where the honest answer sends you elsewhere for part of it, so it is worth stating up front: Warp does not work offline. It streams audio to a speech provider for transcription, which means no connection, no dictation. If you are on a plane, in a basement, or somewhere with genuinely hostile connectivity, you need a different tool for that situation — and there is a good one already on your Mac.
Why most modern dictation needs a connection
The accuracy jump in speech recognition over the last few years came largely from models that are too large to run comfortably on a laptop while you are also doing your actual work. Running one locally means either a smaller model with noticeably worse accuracy, or an acceptable model that competes with your editor for memory and turns your fans on.
Streaming to a provider sidesteps that. You get the large model, your laptop stays cool, and features like live translation become practical. The price is a hard dependency on the network — and, separately, the privacy tradeoff that comes with your audio leaving the device.
What works offline: Apple Dictation
Apple Dictation is the realistic answer for offline use on macOS, and it is genuinely decent.
- Open System Settings → Keyboard.
- Turn on Dictation and pick your languages.
- Let macOS download the language assets — this part needs a connection, once.
- Set the shortcut you want. Test it before you need it.
On Apple Silicon, many dictation requests are then handled on-device. It types into the focused text field, so it covers most of what you need day to day.
What you give up
- Translation. There is no offline path from spoken Spanish to typed English. Translation of that quality is a model-scale problem.
- Voice-driven editing. Selecting a paragraph and saying "make this shorter" requires a language model, not a speech model.
- Accuracy on hard input. Names, jargon, accents, and noisy rooms are where the local model gives ground first.
- Long-form stamina. Local dictation tends to be better at sentences than at paragraphs.
A hybrid setup that works
There is no rule saying you pick one. The setup that holds up in practice is to keep both, with a clear trigger for switching:
- Connected, doing real writing — cloud dictation, for accuracy, translation, and editing by voice.
- Offline, or on anything confidential — Apple Dictation, for capture that never leaves the machine.
Give them clearly different shortcuts. Similar chords for tools with very different privacy properties is exactly how you end up dictating something sensitive into the wrong one.
The plane case, specifically
Flights are where this comes up most. Two things worth knowing: enabling a new dictation language requires a download, so do it on the ground; and inflight wifi is usually enough for streaming transcription, since audio is a small payload compared to video. "Offline" and "bad connection" are different problems and streaming handles the second better than people expect.
Frequently asked questions
Does Warp work offline?
No. Warp streams audio to a cloud speech provider, so dictation requires an internet connection. If offline operation is a hard requirement, Apple Dictation with the on-device option is the right tool.
How do I turn on Apple’s offline dictation?
Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation and enable it. On Apple Silicon Macs, downloaded language assets allow many dictation requests to be processed on-device. macOS handles the download; the first use after enabling a language may need a connection.
Is offline dictation less accurate?
Generally yes, and the gap widens on accented speech, technical vocabulary, proper nouns, and anything multilingual. On clear speech in a quiet room with common vocabulary, the difference is small enough that most people would not notice.
Can I get offline dictation that types into any app?
Partially. Apple Dictation types into the focused field, which covers most apps. What you generally cannot get offline today is the combination of system-wide injection, live translation, and voice-driven editing — those depend on models that are impractical to run locally at usable speed.
Stop typing what you could have said.
Hold `, speak, release. Warp types it where your cursor already is — in any Mac app, in any of 60+ languages.
